At Clinique Sportive HPH, we’ve started looking more and more at the mental skills side of the performance equation. With our experience in physical preparation, we are very confident in our ability to get the bodies of our clients ready to perform at their best — but sometimes there are other obstacles holding them back. In this short excerpt, Caroline Calvé explains how her physical preparation was be sabotaged by a lack of skills to deal with the stress of competition at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver:
“On race day at the Olympics in Vancouver, my thoughts and my lack of mental preparation sabotaged my potential and therefore my result. I was a nervous wreck; my whole body was shaking as I put my hands on the start gates. My inner thoughts circled from one negative and pressure filled comment to the next as I tried to focus on the task at hand. “I have to have a perfect run, I can’t let them down, etc”. How can I focus and master my body when my thoughts are uncontrollably sending me down a spiral? I didn’t have tools to control my physical response to stress, I had no idea how to stop shaking or how to stop the doubt creeping in… If only I had known it was as simple as using my breathing! I was physically ready, I had trained hours upon hours at the gym, but the body can only do it’s job if the brain is disciplined and trained as well.”
